Creating Sacred Space
As Qoya teachers, our sacred work is needed in the world.
Our ability to create sacred space is essential now more than ever.
This is an invitation for the already initiated.
A celebratory weekend retreat just for Qoya teachers.
Join us as we gather in sacred circle to dance
and create a deeper relationship with our practice and the divine.
We invite you to join Rochelle Schieck, Founder of Qoya, and Sarah Charlesworth, Altar Priestess, on a weekend dedicated to honoring the sacredness of embodiment through the joining of Qoya and Altarlust.
These two modalities in tandem create a portal for the living embodiment of love.
An altar makes the invisible forces of love that surround us visible; it is evidence of a sacred journey taken, a physical expression of an energetic alignment. An altar’s very existence becomes a portal for our connection to source.
Qoya is based on the idea that through movement, we remember. We remember our essence is wise, wild and free. We reclaim trust in the physical sensation of truth in the body as we dance in class, move in the world, and gather here, creating sacred space together and deepening our tools in a community of those practicing alongside us.
As Qoya teachers, we can elevate our movement practice and offerings through the creation of sacred altars in our classes and our own practice.
Just like Qoya, altars are a divine tool for navigating life.
Sarah Charlesworth, creator of Altarlust, and Rochelle Schieck, founder of Qoya, have been friends for over 10 years, since the moment they sat down next to each other at a divine feminine course in New York City. Rochelle had just moved to New York from Minnesota, and Sarah had come in from Canada for the weekend. Rochelle likes to believe that Minnesotans are honorary Canadians, so it was destiny! Within moments, they were laughing together, and it hasn’t stopped since.
Their friendship has sacred magic; when they speak to each other, they become more of themselves. Throughout all the challenges of their daily lives, they have supported one another with humor and grace. Throughout all the blessings in their lives, they have taken time to toast, celebrate, and dance. Throughout the shared awareness of life’s journey, they have been dedicated to living guided by love so they can help one another rise up time and time again. Most importantly, they have slowed down enough to pray and create.
Rochelle was so moved by Sarah’s creative offerings with Altarlust, she invited Sarah to come and build altars on a Qoya retreat. Sarah has had such profound awakenings following Rochelle’s calling that she immediately said yes. That first collaboration was a magical experience. When Rochelle walked in the room to witness the altars, she would cry from the beauty of the art - so much so, Rochelle invited Sarah to build her wedding altar. It was an extraordinary moment for both of them. They have each discovered that the combination of their offerings creates a sacred wisdom, and the time has come to share it.
Sarah came on some of the very first Qoya retreats in Costa Rica and did the very first Qoya teacher training in 2011! Like the best of things, there is a golden thread that weaves their lives, art, and inspiration together to create this special weekend as a support to all the Qoya teachers on their individual journeys as they hold space for others with the intention to strengthen the support and soften the sensation of community that holds us all.

Menla Mountain Retreat Center is one of our favorite places to hold retreats. It's deeply sacred land, and was commissioned by the Dalai Lama himself! The land is the oldest known meteor impact crater on Earth, and the local Native American peoples, including the Esopus and Mahicans, regarded this valley and region, with its enormous first-growth hemlock trees, as especially sacred, a place of the spirits. We love their supportive staff, delicious food, cozy rooms, and beautiful landscape, and it is the perfect healing setting for our time together.
