I roll over in bed to see if there are any emails that need to be attended to before I go to breakfast.  My eyes are magnetically drawn to the all caps subject line- WOO HOO, CHECK OUT QOYA IN NY MAG! I click on the link and there it is, Qoya’s first big debut in the media circuit in New York Magazine.  I am proud.  I am nervous.  And I am fascinated by the description of class from the first man to observe it. I love how it reads as wild, as racy and as an evolution of the male fantasy of a pillow fight into a dance class of women being sensual in each other’s presence.

It brought me to ask myself again, “What is a Qoya Class all about?”

When I think of Qoya’s main intentions in class there are 2 things.

1- To remember.  To remember what it feels like to know your essence through your body as wise, wild and free.

2- To embody the feminine.  Which is really to embody the full spectrum of life.   The agony and the ecstacy.  The broken hearted resilient visionary.  The friend lover child sister mother sage maiden queen.  The erotic innocence, the wild temptress, the woman who knows the potential of her own body.  In one sentence, a woman who knows her body and loves it as it is.

In definition- Qoya is a Quechan word for Queen, a female manifestation of higher consciousness.  Being trained as a dancer, yoga teacher and personal trainer, Qoya, to me, is that shift, or evolution, in consciousness.  It’s a change in direction that evolves the way we have been taught to move our bodies as women. Drawn from the wisdom of yoga, creative expression in dance, and the pleasure found in sensual movement, Qoya helps women learn to enjoy and revel in their feminine bodies.  My philosophy is that as soon as you learn to enjoy your body and it’s movement, you can apply that to everything you do in life.

In the midst of this philosophical shift, Qoya classes combine the traditional benefits of fitness — including strength, flexibility, balance, endurance, and agility training.  In other words, you burn calories and you sweat.  Even though it never feels like a “workout” where you had to struggle, you feel sore the next day (in a good way).

Qoya invites each individual woman to fully express herself through her body.

Collectively, it explores ways we can build our strength: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual. Ways we can be flexible: not only in our hamstrings, but in the flow of our day. Ways we can be agile: like a child who falls down and gets right back up. Ways we can savor: an exhale that takes us into a hip circle of remembering the gift of being a woman. Ways we can love and honor: what is — as it is — and still dare to dream bigger dreams. Ways we can say yes.

And, like in the article, it can get kind of wild.
