Bio: Qoya connects me to my "Spiritual authority." Qoya represents a Lineage of Wisdom. It's the Grandmother, The Grandfather, the Mother, the Father, the Sister, the Best friend, the Teacher - the sacred place you go to whenever you feel something in your life, whether that be love, fear, or anything in between. You know for sure that the one thing you can do to feel it more deeply, to come into balance and/or right relationship with whatever you are feeling, is to DANCE with it. You move it through your entire body in a way that feels as good as it possibly can. Qoya is an ancient medicine. It's like a treasure chest of healing modalities that will connect you to your essence - that which is wise, wild and free.
When did you take your first Qoya class? I took my first Qoya class in 2012 at Four Gates Physical and Energetic Culture in Minneapolis with Colleen LaSota. I had met a woman a few weeks prior called Emma Lloyd, also a Qoya teacher, at a women's networking event across town. Ironically, she was from a small town in Wales in the United Kindgom that was less than 4 miles from my own little hometown in Wales; however, we had never met before but had mutual friends and places in common. When we met, it felt like we were already friends, as is the case whenever Welsh people meet anywhere in the world. There is this instant connection and bond that happens. I had been searching for a way to connect to my feminine side through some type of movement. She had suggested trying Qoya and so I went to the next class. When I arrived at the studio, I realized that this same studio had been calling to me for over 6 months as I drove past it every day to take my daughter to school. It would literally call to me, and I was intrigued with why. That night as I after my first Qoya class I knew this was the beginning of a great journey.
What does it mean for you to teach Qoya? To teach Qoya is a Sacred gift. To offer a Sacred space and an experience for a Woman to connect with herself and her body in a way that she never has before, and in a way that feels good, that gives absolute permission to be in her body and to feel it all. To be able to offer tools and resources that allow a deeper connection to herself so that she can begin to remember who she is and use the principles within Qoya as a way to navigate her life from a place of Love, Compassion and Authenticity.
What is your favorite song to dance to right now? Oh my Goddess so many! "Soul Rebel" by Bob Marley & The Wailers. "From Eden" by Hozier. "Sun is Shining (Gauzz chill mix)" by ReUnited. "Uncantena" by Sylvan Esso. "Believe" by Mumford & Sons. "Hideaway" by Kiesza. "Into the Mystic" by Van Morrison. "Hondo" by Monoswezo. "Fafa (Reprise)" by Vieux Farka Toure. "Magic" by Coldplay. "Wide Open Spaces" by Dixie Chicks.
What book has inspired you on the path to embodying the feminine? Auto-biography of an Orgasm by Betsy Blakenbaker, Reveal by Meggan Jane Watterson, The Red Tent by Anita Diamant, The Gift of Imperfection by Brene Brown, The Desire Map by Danielle LaPorte, Women who run with the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Sacred Seduction by Kitty Cavalier, The Mandala of the Enlightened Feminine by Lama Tsultrim Allione
What would you tell someone who is thinking of taking a Qoya class for the first time? If you are looking for deeper connection to yourself, to your loved ones, to life itself, come and experience Qoya for yourself and discover the Truth within your own body.
