#1 Creating Sacred Space
In a Qoya class, you enter and rose petals decorate the floor.
Lights are dimmed low and candlelight warms the room.
You feel that sacred space has been created.
When entering a sacred space, many women will have a strong emotional response right away.
This is simply our soulʼs longing for recognition.
It is strongly encouraged that you open sacred space every time you teach. I invite you to experiment with calling in the four directions and in time start creating your own way of creating sacred space.
There are many ways as teachers can prepare sacred space to honor the divine.
- Burn sage to clear and purify the energy
- Pull a goddess or angel card to help participants set an intention
- Have an altar with flowers or sacred statues
- Rose petals along the edges of the room, showing that the room has been prepared for a goddess to enter
- Light candles
- Say a prayer
- Calling in the directions
The most important thing is the clarity and sincerity of your intention.
As you experiment with creating sacred space, check in with yourself and make sure you find a way that resonates in your body and heart as truly honoring the sacred gift it is to be able to share time and space together in this special way, and as you create your own unique ways to open sacred space, please share them in the forum here, so we can learn from each other.
You are invited to call in sacred space before the class arrives and begin class by creating
sacred space once everyone arrives.
For example: you could call in the directions, light candles, put rose petals out, use incense, say
a prayer, make an altar, etc. all before anyone arrives.
And once the class is ready to begin, gather all the women in a circle, give the intro to what
Qoya is and then have them pull a goddess card and partner up with someone to share why that
is the most perfect card for them to pull today. If it is a smaller group, you can have everyone
share with the whole circle. It’s important to start the class in a circle and maintain the whole
class in a circle if the space allows it.
The philosophy for doing this exercise is two-fold. One, is to give them an opportunity to bring their voice into the room and be conscious about where they are, hoping to by-pass the tendency of just going through the motions and allowing them to be really present. The second is that while there are many rituals in different religions on how to create sacred space, in Meggan Watterson’s book Reveal: A Sacred Manual for Getting Spiritually Naked, she talks about the only thing that is necessary to create sacred space is two or more women who tell the truth about their lives. And, this in itself will evoke the sacred. It will root us in love.

Here are the instructions for calling in the directions for whenever you would like to call in sacred space this way.
Calling in the four directions
With this prayer, you can create sacred space and summon the healing powers of nature anywhere, anytime.
What you’ll need:
1) Rattle (if you have one, if not, it's ok)
2) Sacred Florida water (recommended to take a sip before you call in each direction. The powerful taste of the Florida water assists in keeping you fully present as you pray).

***I also recommend the book Shaman, Healer, Sage by my teacher Alberto Villoldo who gives a beautiful introduction to Shamanism and ways to integrate the sacred teachings into your life with things like creating sacred space: http://www.amazon.com/Shaman-Healer-Sage-Yourself-Medicine/dp/0609605445
Begin by facing South. Smudge or blow the scented water to the South, then hold up your hand, palm facing out. Recite the first verse, calling upon serpent.
To the winds of the South, Great serpent, wrap your coils of light around us. Teach us to shed the past the way you shed your skin, to walk softly on the Earth. Remind us to do everything we do with conscious beauty. Aho!
Face West, and recite the second verse, calling upon the jaguar:
To the winds of the West, Mother jaguar, please protect our medicine space. Bring us into our highest integrity and teach us how to trust our instincts the way that you do as we navigate our way this world. Aho!
Face North, and call upon the Hummingbird:
To the winds of the North, Hummingbird, Grandmothers and Grandfathers, Ancient Ones, please be with us. Like the small hummingbird that travels on an epic journey from Canada to Brazil every year, let it be a metaphor of our own soulʼs journey, one individual part of a collective awakening. Like the hummingbird that memorizes thousands of flowers, but only goes to the ones that truly nourish it, show us where our nectar is in life and give us the discipline to go there most often. Ancestors~ those of you that have been here before and will be here after us, please guide our way and let our eyes, ears, minds and hearts be open enough to hear you. Aho!
Face East to call on Eagle:
To the winds of the East. Great eagle, condor come to us from the place of the rising Sun. Remind us what it feels like to be wing tip to wing tip with Great Spirit. Give us the courage to go beyond what we know and dream bigger dreams. Aho!
Come down to the ground and touch the Earth:
Sweet Sweet Mother Earth. Thank you for all you have given us. The food that grows in your fields. The materials that make our clothes and our homes. The beauty of your oceans, mountains and sunsets. Teach us how to honor you by honoring all of your creations. Let us be so full of gratitude for all you have given us that we become better and more passionate stewards of your creations and of life. Aho!
Look up to the Heavens above:
Father Sun, Grandmother Moon, Star Brothers, Star Sisters Great Spirit, you who are known by a thousand names and are also unnamable. Hear our prayer to shine. Just as you consistently radiate light into this world, guide us to know how we can do the same. Teach us how to dance with the mysteries of life and celebrate with gratitude the gift it is to sing the song of life one more day. Aho!
At the end of the class, be sure to close the sacred space by thanking serpent, jaguar, hummingbird, eagle, mother earth and father sun, grandmother moon, star brothers and sisters.
